Description
Red Poppy flower with honey bee collecting pollen. I took this photograph in Southern California this Spring. The area has seen unusual amounts of rain and the plants are showing their beauty. Honey bees can be seen on almost every flowering plant. I gather California will have a good honey harvest this year. Even in the desert they could be see and heared buzzing around. A poppy is a flowering plant in the subfamily Papaveroideae of the family Papaveraceae. Poppies are herbaceous plants, often grown for their colourful flowers. One species of poppy, Papaver somniferum, is the source of the crude drug opium which contains powerful medicinal alkaloids such as morphine and has been used since ancient times as an analgesic and narcotic medicinal and recreational drug.
