Description
Pink quince blossom - Chaenomeles often referred to as the golden apple. Last fruit to ripen in growing season. Beautiful elegant spring blossom adores scraps in early Spring. Honey bees love quince blossom.
The quince is the sole member of the genus Cydonia in the family Rosaceae. It is a deciduous tree that bears a pome fruit, similar in appearance to a pear, and bright golden-yellow when mature. The quince is hard, acid, pear-shaped fruit used in preserves or as flavoring.
The shrub or small tree that bears the quince fruit, native to western Asia. Their flowers come in multiple colors.
Quince is believed to predate the apple, and the apple goes way back — unless, of course, all those ancient mentions like the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden were indeed referring to apples and not the quince. Greek mythology associates the quince with Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and many believe that the golden apple given to her by Paris was a quince.
Quinces are used to make marmalade, spoon sweets and jellies — they have a lot of natural pectins, a naturally occurring starch. They also make great additions to apple pies, and they're delicious when cooked with meats.
